Stoma is one of the most life changing events for patients and it is the biggest disappointment. In this case, any problem that may arise with a stoma can increase the patient's anxiety, stress, and dissatisfaction. On the contrary, a well-planned system from the creation of the stoma to its care and rehabilitation can improve the quality of life by enabling the patient to experience the comfort of the stoma like a natural defecation opening such as the anus. This session was built to better arm surgical teams with resources to help individuals with stoma live a high-quality life even in the most challenging situations. From preoperative planning, creation of a peroperative stoma to the management of early and late postoperative complications, this session aims to provide surgeons, nurses, with pragmatic, ready-to-use advice on helping individuals with stoma.
“Creating a stoma is a surgical art. The artist who beautifies this art is the colorectal surgeon and stomatherapist.”
Objectives:
- Detail specifics and clinical benefits of stoma site marking and pre-operative education.
- Discuss select technical considerations of stoma creation.
- Describe post-operative stoma care.
- Detail select stoma-related complications and treatment.
- At the end of this session, participants should be able to learn and contribute to changing their personal practice.

COURSE 6: The Importance of Nutrition in Colorectal Surgery
09:00-13:00
Course Organizer: Selman Sökmen (Türkiye), Osman Abbasoğlu (Türkiye)
Venue: Congress Venue Wyndham Grand Istanbul Levent
- Click here for venue location on the map
Objectives: Surgery is the mainstay treatment for patients with colorectal cancers. However, despite surgical resection with curative intent and numerous advances in the effectiveness of (neo-)adjuvant therapies, recurrent and metastatic disease remain common and carry a high-risk of mortality. The biological perturbations that accompany the surgical stress response and activation of neural, inflammatory, and pro-angiogenic signaling pathways which also promote the growth and metastatic spread of cancer. In addition, three important domains strikingly affect the perioperative morbidity and mortality and final oncologic outcomes: co-morbidities, nutrition, and (domino-)complications. It is shown that many perioperative programmed interventions such as nutritional support, prehabilitation, ERAS protocols, and intense care may address these challenges and improve outcomes particularly in advanced colorectal and pelvic surgery. In this course, we outline the rationale and use the current evidence in nutritional science to achieve survival benefit and decrease surgical morbidity and mortality.
Learning Objectives:
- To define the extent of malnutrition in colorectal surgery
- To determine the prognostic impact of nutrition in colorectal cancer surgery
